Batu Caves is a sacred gathering place for devotees
Thaipusam is usually held in January or February each year. In Malaysia, the most renowned Thaipusam celebration takes place at Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur.
Thaipusam is a Hindu festival primarily celebrated in honor of the day when Lord Murugan—the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, and the god of war—vanquished the demon. Devotees typically express their devotion through acts of penance, such as carrying heavy burdens and walking long distances as a tribute to the deity. Some participants pierce their bodies with needles or hooks, believing that through this act, they can cleanse themselves of the past year's sins and demonstrate their deep faith.
